Hunting and village: how we want to manage our hunting ground

For the Town Hall of El Recuenco, hunting is not a minor issue: it is an essential tool for the management of our mountains and part of the life of villages like ours. Without hunting, there is no population control, damage to agriculture and trees skyrockets, and an activity that brings life, interaction, and economy to the rural environment is lost. That is why the Town Hall has taken on the management of the hunting ground GU-10.958 “Villa de El Recuenco” with a commitment: to do it with technical criteria, taking care of what we have to make it better and more valuable each year.

As happens in many hunting grounds in our mountains, the censuses carried out show a strong sex imbalance in the populations of red deer and fallow deer, with a very pronounced excess of females. The first three driven hunts of the season are therefore dedicated to the culling of red deer hinds, fallow deer does, and wild boar. Reducing the female load is the condition for the population to regain a healthy sex ratio.

The January driven hunt incorporates selective males. With so many females and so few quality males, the specimens that do not meet the standards in antlers or body size compete with the good ones and hinder their development. We are precisely looking to remove from the mountains the animal that should not leave offspring and protect the one that should, so that reproduction is left in the hands of the best males. The results are not seen in one season, but in four or five years this hunting ground can offer game of another category, with genetics and trophies worthy of the terrain we have.

There is something more. All income from hunting exploitation is reinvested in the village: in the management, conservation, and improvement of the hunting ground itself, and in the municipal accounts, which allows the Town Hall to undertake more and better investments both in the mountains and for the neighbors. Each sold position is a day of hunting and, at the same time, a direct contribution to the future of El Recuenco.

Conditions and meat of the game

Participation in the driven hunts implies acceptance and compliance with the regulatory bases, available on the electronic headquarters of the Town Hall of El Recuenco, where the requirements for hunters, the system of positions, and the conditions for refunds are outlined.

Regarding the game taken, the meat from ten of them will be distributed among the hunters participating. The rest of the carcasses will be allocated for sale to an authorized meat company, and the trophies will correspond in all cases to the hunter who has taken them.

All positions will be awarded by lottery.
